Thank you for speaking out against the terrible, vile cruelty inflicted on poor Regina. It is so sad that a shelter dog was picked on and killed by thugs who have so far not been identified. It is important to find the person or persons responsible for this crime because soon they may turn their anger towards human beings. Animals must be protected by law, this crime must NOT go unaddressed by the Spanish authorities, say NO to cruelty and protect the voiceless. Compassion is essential, people are horrified that a homeless dog whose trust had just been gained by caring staff, was ruined in this way and nobody in authority seems to care. I hope there will be justice for Regina and I also hope people will realise there is a vast amount of animal cruelty in Spain that is not being dealt with, animals are dying in horrific circumstances every day and those guilty of the abuse are not being prosecuted. In Regina's name I hope positive change will come that enables animal protection to be considered important by Spanish people and regarded as a vital part of life that every good citizen can promote and be proud of. Welfare of sentient beings should be actively encouraged so kindness to animals is seen by example, as beneficial to every member of the community and by young and old, therefore children will learn to respect the voiceless and these atrocities may one day cease to occur.

EVERY VOICE COUNTS!!

Thank you

Support for animal activists imprisoned in Austria - 26 June 2008

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

It's a very sad day when compassionate people are locked up for caring.

I wonder what will become of sentient creatures when human beings are prevented by law, from speaking up for them. It seems profit is more important than people and animals. What kind of world are we living in and what kind of world will we leave behind for future generations?

Are we expected to be dumbed down and oppressed to the extent that we will happily become silent zombies, totally dependent on the deaths of billions of animals in order that we may prosper?

How unhealthy this planet is becoming... I'm ashamed of the bad politics that allows those that speak out against cruelty to be locked away in cages.
Why is it safer for the powers that be to want compassion switched quietly off, whilst enthusiastically protecting the greed and excesses of corporate muscle... and without losing a moment's sleep?

It's obvious isn't it. Animal cruelty is profitable. Caring people are not.

Society is crumbling into a fragmented mess of materialism and consumerism. Endangered species are disappearing before our eyes, global warming will render the earth a no go area if we do not curb our selfish habits of using and abusing the earth's natural resources to extinction.

And sadly, voiceless animals will always be the first to lose their protectors - and the last to be considered important, or worthy of life.

Disgraceful.

Ever occur to you why some of us can be this much concerned with animals suffering?
Because government is not.
Why not?
Animals don't vote.

Dear all,

I'm sharing this appeal as I know Mary & Chris are struggling to pay a large feed bill at Jollity Farm of £1600. If you can spare a pound or a dollar today to help them it would be much appreciated, I'm starting off the appeal by sending £20 because I've sold two cds this week & having visited the shelter and seen these happy animals that are cared for so well and for life, I know every penny counts and Mary does such a lot for rescue all over the world, often giving money when she has little herself. Please forward this mail to all your friends, thank you!!

Best wishes, Maria xx

Greek Animal Rescue Sponsored Dog Walk - 15 June 2008

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Dear all,

we had a fantastic day today at the Greek Animal Rescue Sponsored Dog Walk in Trent Park, Herts, UK. The weather thankfully stayed sunny for the dogs & their people as over 100 supporters of Vesna's wonderful organisation took to the green rolling hills with their beautiful Greek rescue dogs aka 'The Greekies' and enjoyed a brisk walk through woodland, up hill and down dale!

It really was a sight to behold and amazing that all the dogs got on so well together and waggy tails could be seen for miles!

We returned to our meeting place & sat down for a well earned rest with the dogs enjoying vegan doggie biscuits (made by one of GAR's supporters, without such a great back-up & support, there would be no happy Greekies!) And bowls of water everywhere!

Our Madi loved meeting all the other dogs and she crashed out in the back of the car once she'd had a good drink & some treats!

Then it was time to have a chat with everyone & it was great to meet Vesna in person and we hope to set a date for a fund raising rock gig in the not too distant future.

Here's some pics from today and links to the websites of this terrific charity, I'll try to make a video soon :)

Best wishes
Maria & Paul xx

Footnote from Vesna:

Please note we do not bring many dogs into the UK for re-homing, but are always on the lookout for loving homes and if anybody is interested in adopting a Greekie, can they please contact me and we'll send a pre-adoption form. Ideally we are looking for homes in the South-East, as we home-check every potential adopter. We may be a bit fussy in the kind of homes we're looking for (with fully fenced garden, people who are not out more than 4 hours a day ... perhaps have 1-2 dogs already, as Greekies are very social ...), but all the dogs we bring here have known great hardship and they deserve only the best!

Thank you :)

The Scary Guy: Story by Grosu Luciana - 8 June 2008

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The Scary Guy:
Story by: Grosu Luciana

Committed to World Peace
http://www.studentpa.info/spip.php?article804

You can’t miss this guy if you meet him on the street….though you might need a few good minutes to figure out all the piercing and tattoos he’s got everywhere. Don’t stare like that! He’s a very famous person! He calls himself “the new face of love”. He is The Scary Guy.

Who is “The Scary Guy”?

No, he’s not a dangerous person! His official mission is “The Total Elimination of Hate, Violence and Prejudice Worldwide”. You might think this is not a very easy-achievable objective…Yet, don’t make the mistake to ask The Scary Guy “what do you do to fight against it?” Because actually he’s not fighting anything. He’s just teaching.

“I do not fight against anything. I train people how to teach love and acceptance. That is what I do from the moment I wake up . . . until I fall asleep. To “fight” and to be “against” people or things would cause me to become unfocused on who I am and what I do to help others”.

This philosophy already helped The Scary Guy achieve great things: he has worked with over seven million people around the world and visited thousands of schools teaching children about the need to accept each other. “Bullying” is the name of the problem and The Scary Guy seems to be the right answer.

“I do not combat bullying, he reminds me. I expose the truth of hate, violence and prejudice as learned behavior based in fear and lack of knowledge without condemning, finding fault, shame or guilt.”

Bullying can mean anything from name calling and teasing to extreme violence and crime. But there are two characteristics that perfectly describe the bullying phenomena. One, it happens in schools. And two, the aggressors are kids. “This behavior is learned at home, explains The Scary Guy. But I can not change anyone; I do not have that power. By speaking the truth about the process of name calling, and words as energy, kids listen and then choose to understand. Kids change themselves. “

How is The Scary Guy working?

The Scary Guy goes to schools and talks to everyone: children, parents and teachers. “I do the very same programs for adults that I would do for 12 year olds. All adults get this program. I show all people how to empower themselves. I teach them the process of creating world peace.”

He has developed a few programs like “The prejudice elimination” program, the “Circle of courage” Emotional Intelligence program, or the “Cognitive Thought Resolution “ program. So you can see this time it’s not just bla-bla-bla….

“I identify the processes that are given labels as ‘bullying’, ‘anger’, ‘prejudice’, ‘racism’, ‘homophobia’ etc and bring everyone to the same level of awareness as to how we are all involved in this flow of negative energy – although at different levels,” The Scary Guy started to explain to me.

He addresses kids in different ways in order to be able to explain them these rather abstract ideas.

“I speak kid. I speak just like them . . . if they are 5 years old . . . I’m 5 years old. If the are 25 years old . . . I’m 25 years old. I give them examples of me and my old behavior. I always tell them like it really is . . . the truth of what is really going on with all people.”

The main idea of The Scary Guy’s speeches is that we all have a choice and that we can chose not to be a victim.

“We are only responsible for our OWN behavior. We are in control of the energy that we take ‘IN’. However the human race is conditioned to accept all words and actions as theirs, regardless whether it is positive or negative. People who automatically take in negative energy and believe it to be true are labeled as ‘victims’. But you no longer need to be a victim, you have a CHOICE”.

We can thus chose our response and decide not to react knowing that it’s the other person that has the problem, no matter what horrible thing it said about us.

“You can just walk away or if this person is a friend, colleague or relative you can ask her “ Are you OK?” or tell her she seems to have a problem and ask her if she would like to talk about it. By asking them a question, you are helping them to process their ‘own’ energy and learn about themselves – with LOVE and KINDNESS, not shame, guilt and condemnation. This is what they – the bullies – are used to at home. They are or have been, victimized and abused by someone else usually at home and they’ve learn this behavior and now use it in schools to get their needs met.”

That’s why we are all empowered to stop violence and hate manifest themselves.

“It’s not about ‘fighting’ against the negative energy, that would just put more negative energy on the planet .Our mission is to replace the negative energy with positive energy. We need to teach children how to do this and show them it is possible, so they can teach it to their children and so on. ‘Victims’ of bullying and the ‘bullies’ have the power to create their own love instead of getting their attention and needs met in other ways.” The Scary Guy concluded.

So…The Scary Guy believes world peace is actually possible, now and here.

“Most people are waiting and hoping for World Peace, when in fact it is already here and we can each have it now! This begins in each of us. It is not a thing that will be delivered by a Government. All of the steps we need to take live within every person on this planet. Making a difference begins in your mind. Then you decide to take action. Awareness, understanding, acceptance and love, this is what all children should have the inside of them. Now.”

The Scary Guy available all over Europe and…online

The Scary Guy is well-known in UK, where he visited various schools in important cities such as Portsmouth or Liverpool. He is also very popular in Germany where he was in Cologne and Frankfurt. Austria and Ireland are other two important The Scary Guy’s destinations. He gave radio interviews in Switzerland and was featured on “Teacher’s TV” in UK. It looks like Europe is thrilled to learn more about The Scary Guy.

“Scary Guy has changed my life for the better and I thank him with all my heart”, says Craig – Second Year Student, Hartlepool, UK

I personally met The Scary Guy on the WorldWideWeb, after participating at an e-discussion about bullying and school violence. I got an e-mail interview which was both fun and interesting. New technology helps a lot.

“The Scary Guy mobile channel” is the official mobile internet service of The Scary Guy. This channel keeps you updated with The Scary Guy’ news as he travels across the world. You are also invited to share your personal experiences. And you can also win an EXCLUSIVE ‘Scary Channel’ T-shirt! “ …

Ok…but who is The Scary Guy after all?

You mean the man behind the tattoo mask? But….there is no mask!

“There is no difference between my personal life and my work life. I do not “go to work”, I live my life everyday helping others full time”, The Scary Guy confessed.

He was born December 29, 1953, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. He was the eldest of three boys born to Constance Buckingham and Carroll Kaufmann. His mother never called him Little Scary! Yet, he personally experienced hate, anger, violence. He was a baby portrait photographer, a computer salesman, a tattoo artist. It was only in 1998 that he legally changed his name to The Scary Guy. And, yes, he also sold his tattoo shops….

“I began helping others the moment I realized that I was living a lie, thinking I was a good guy running my mouth, blaming others for all my negative words and actions. When I woke up and discovered this is who I really was? That is the moment I decided to get real and help others.”

What else would you like to know about The Scary Guy? Oh, yes, about his tattoos….

“I was motivated by children and their actions. Kids killing kids because over their differences. But my tattoos are about my life and I tattooed myself for me, no one else. I use my tattoos today. It is less important for me to get tattooed than it is to use my tattoos to deliver this all important message.”

You can see he’s truly committed. The Scary Guy seems to know exactly which are the steps we need to take in order to achieve world peace, yet he is still opened to learn from children.

“I am a child. I do not know very much. I am here to learn from all people. So then all children know that I do not know everything and will help me learn”. Are children really afraid of The Scary Guy? ...

“Kids think I rock. They call me a legend. They always tell me to keep on going and never quit, The Scary Guy says proudly. I receive 4,000 letters per month, he adds. I not only listen, I respond to all of them personally.”

Just one more question now. The Scary Guy’s vision of a perfect world?...

“To wake up rested knowing I have one more day to help just one more person.”

Sound Advice from Greek Animal Rescue - 8 June 2008

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Dear all,

forwarding from the new GAR myspace blog, please share this info with your friends and animal advocates. GAR arrange adoptions of unwanted Greek dogs in UK every year, they are a wonderful team of dedicated volunteers and I can't wait to meet them at the sponsored dog walk next Sunday!

Thanks, Maria xx

How it all started

It all began with a holiday in Greece in 1987. My husband Paul and I drove to Greece and intended to travel around for one month, but as we crossed the border, we encountered the first stray, not realising at the time that he was just one out of hundreds we were to see during our so called holiday.

We spent ten days of our holiday on Crete and that’s where we witnessed appalling neglect of animals ... dozens of hungry stray dogs and cats begging for scraps, ‘guard dogs’ chained to rusty oil drums or to a tree, countless dead dogs and cats lying by the roadside, donkeys and mules left tied in barren fields with no food or water, often hobbling or barely able to move.

The last few days of our so-called holiday found us helping at an animal shelter near Athens and it was there we realised that sterilising of dogs and cats wasn’t a common practice in Greece, but abandonment of unwanted litters of puppies and kittens was.

The few decent shelters there are in Greece, should be there to help and to provide a sanctuary for the neediest cases - the starved, sick or injured animals, but unfortunately they also become a dumping ground for unwanted litters of puppies and kittens and for older dogs, who have been replaced by ‘younger models’.

Our fund-raising to help animals in Greece began as soon as we returned home from that fateful holiday in 1987 and a few months later, we also set the wheels in motion to apply for a charity status, which we finally obtained in October 1989.

Every year we receive dozens of letters, emails and phone calls from people who have returned from their holiday in Greece, distressed and unable to erase the sad memories of hungry and sick strays, often witnessing deliberate cruelty being inflicted on them. Some decide to ‘adopt’ a stray dog or a cat they had befriended and we help them all we can (though not financially), since we have considerable experience with the ‘Pet Passports’ procedure. We have in fact rehomed in the UK many dogs and cats from Greece that we have helped to rescue, either through the shelters we support or in response to a call for help, often involving an animal which requires urgent surgery (leg amputation, removal of an eye, etc.).

Animal suffering knows no frontiers, language or creed.
Please help us to help animals in Greece.

Animals in Greece have very few friends....

Poisoning of stray (and owned) dogs and cats is widespread throughout Greece and it claims countless lives every year.
Those responsible for spreading around poisoned bait are rarely caught in the act and usually the bodies of their victims are picked up by garbage collectors in the early hours of the morning. The poisoning is often excused as a necessary and cheap way of getting rid of the strays, who are seen as a 'problem'. Some people fear they would 'spread disease', others consider them a nuisance, especially when their numbers increase.

The only long-term solution to reducing the number of strays on the streets is to tackle the problem at its source .... by sterilising OWNED dogs and cats, but many Greek people still regard neutering as a negative intervention in the animals' nature or they simply don't want to spend any money. Alas, these same people don't think twice about abandoning unwanted litters of puppies and kittens .... and so the vicious cycle continues.....

....BUT WHEN THE TOURISTS LEAVE

....The average life-span of a stray dog in Greece is less than two years, as most of them perish during the winter months, if not shortly after the holiday season comes to an end. The last charter flights depart from the islands at the end of October, by which time most of the hotels and tavernas have closed down for the winter.

The strays, so dependent on the tourists for food during the summer, are left to fend for themselves, not knowing where their next meal would be coming from ... poisoned bait may be their last morsel.

Millions of tourists from all over the world visit Greece every year and many are shocked by the sights of animals in distress. They often befriend and feed a few strays, who are generally very good- natured and friendly – they just want to 'belong' and they try very hard to find somebody to adopt them .... the lucky few succeed.

We (Greek Animal Rescue or GAR) endeavour to help as many animals as we can by supporting a number of small shelters, but while they try to take in the sick and injured, they sadly can't help every homeless stray - there are simply too many.

Rescue work, neutering, treatment and care of sick and injured animals and eventually finding good homes for some of them (including in the UK), are our main priorities.

We rely entirely on voluntary donations and every penny is put to good use, but the needs are many .... Those of you who have been to Greece in the past will not need convincing that animals in Greece need all the help they can get!

TIPS FOR TOURISTS WHO BEFRIEND A STRAY DOG OR CAT

In general, we don't encourage people to go to Greece on holiday, because the attitude towards animals will never change as long as the foreign tourists continue to fill the pockets of the Greek people with their hard earned money. In addition, with the growth of tourism, the number of strays dogs and cats has also 'grown', because the tourists feel sorry for them and feed them. Of course!! How could they walk past starving animals?! Tragically, most of the strays don't survive for long after the tourist season comes to a close ... because they are either poisoned, killed by cars, shot, or they become ill & die...
However, if you do go to Greece and befriend a stray dog / cat, please take note of the 'tips' below.
-------------------------------------------

1) An absolute no-no ... NEVER bring a dog/cat into your appartment, because the day will come when you will leave and will have to put the dog/cat back on the street. In other words, just when they're made to feel loved and secure, they're dumped back on the streets ... double betrayal!
2) If you want to feed the strays, do so away from the hotel you are staying at, because if the dogs/cats know they will be fed, they will hang around, but after you leave, the hotel owner/staff will not appreciate them hanging around and they risk being shooed away (at best), hit or worse - be poisoned, or driven into the mountains and left there to starve to death (this is NO exaggeration!)! If you feed dogs/cats, don't hang around, but leave while they're eating. Don't let the animals become too attached to you, as they will miss the affection you give them after you leave.
3) Don't let the dog(s) / cat(s) you have befriended follow you around. It may seem flattering, but when you leave, they will once again have to fend for themselves.
4) If you find an injured animal, a tourist information office (or the owner of the hotel where you're staying) should be able to give you details of where a vet can be found or if there's an animal welfare organisation you could contact. However, taxi drivers (in general) are not willing to put an animal into their cars, nor are they allowed on public transport (buses etc).

5) If you are upset by the plight of animals, don't ignore it, thinking that there's nothing you can do to make a difference .... make a fuss ... be vocal!! Call one or more of the relevant officials whose details are included below and INSIST they put you in contact with a local official who can follow up your complaint:

In Memory of Buck - 6 June 2008

Dear all,

Andro & Theresa worked so hard on this film to make sure Buck and all dogs living and dying through such terrible cruelty, are never forgotten. Please share the youtube link to help raise awareness.

'In Memory of Buck'

LCA Background on Buck's Bill
http://www.lcanimal.org/cmpgn/cmpgn_dog_pspa.htm

Info -

Though the Pet Safety and Protection Act passed in both the House and Senate as Amendments in their respective Farm Bills in 2007, the provision was excluded from the final version of the 2008 Farm Bill. The Pet Safety and Protection Act also known as "Bucks Bill", would have amended the Animal Welfare Act to ensure that all dogs and cats used by research facilities, (often for painful and terminal experimentation), are obtained legally. The PSPA would have made it impossible for animal research facilities to buy dogs and cats from Class B dealers who traffic in "Random Source" animals for sale to laboratories.

Buck was named as one of the many animals rescued by Last Chance for Animals during a 2003 raid of the nation's most notorious Class B animal dealers, C.C. Baird. Buck was very ill on the day of his rescue, struggling with Stage 3 Heartworm disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Parasitic pneumonia. Buck spent 7 months at the vet clinic before he was able to be moved to a foster family. Buck died in foster care, succumbing to the abuse he suffered at the hands of C.C. Baird. May we never forget Buck.

Last Chance for Animals special investigator "Pete" went undercover at the Martin Creek Kennels in april 2003 and exposed the horrors that animals endure, a story told in the HBO film "Dealing Dogs". "Bucks Bill" honors Buck and all the dogs and cats who die due to inadequate care and abuse at the hands of Class B animal dealers like C.C. Baird.

Class A and B Animal Dealers are licensed by the USDA. Class A dealers breed and sell dogs strictly to be sold to labs for research. Class B Animal Dealers, however, obtain their animals from tax-payer-funded shelters, animal auctions, and other dealers, some of whom have been linked to the black market. Dogs and Cats obtained by Class B dealers and the "Bunchers" who round up animals for these dealers, have a long history of trafficking in stolen pets and misrepresenting themselves in responding to "Free-to-a-good-home" adds, with the unfortunate animals eventually being sold to research labs for experimentation.

15 "Random Source" Class B dealers are currently licensed by the USDA to sell dogs and cats for experimentation. The USDA's Animal and Plant health Inspection Service, (APHIS), is responsible for inspecting their premises, but the agency is grossly negligent in overseeing the individuals who supply the animals and their kennels. The unfathomable abuse and neglect is an absolute abomination, over crowded cages, rotten food, food contaminated with faeces, frozen drinking water, dogs with serious untreated injuries and diseases, and live dogs caged with carcasses of dead dogs are among the abuses documented in the film.

In 1966. Life Magazine first exposed the thriving commerce of unregulated animal dealers who supplied animals to America's laboratories for research. Life photographer Stan Wayman accompanied Frank McMahon, chief investigator of the HSUS, and a group of Maryland State Troopers and Humane officers in a 1996 raid of animal dealer Lester Browns property. Wayman's photographs shocked and outraged the american public, prompting The U.S. Congress to pass the "Laboratory Animal Welfare Act" of 1966.

For more than a decade, Senator Daniel Akaka, (D-HI) has introduced legislation to protect stray animals in Shelters from being used in experiments, and each time the legislation has been defeated by special interests groups who lobby on behalf of those in the animal dealing business.

In 2007, The Pet Safety Protection Act passed in the Senate (79-14) and House (231-191), but because of inconsistencies between the Senate and the House Farm Bill, a conference committee was established to resolve the issues. It was during this process that the PSPA language was removed. Language that would have restricted the use of stray animals and animals from shelters from being sold to research and would have imposed fines on violators.

Buck will not have died in vain. We must never give up or in to special interest groups who exploit animals for money in needless experiments that serve human beings no good purpose. We must continue to pursue the Pet Safety and Protection Act in the next years legislation season.

Thank you to all U.S. Congressional Members who supported "Bucks Bill", especially Representatives Michael Doyle (D-PA), and Steve Israel (D-NY) and to Senator Daniel Akaka (D-HI) for his tireless and relentless effort to get these protections passed.

Contact Senator Tom Harkin, Chariman of the Senate. House conference committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry and the Senate-House committee on the farm bill and express your outrage in his decision to remove the PSPA from the farm bill.

Thank you.

Press Release
May 2008

' What's It All About ...? Alfy !'

A book of poetry created by Elaine & Rod Remnant-Ashton has been launched this month, to raise funds for the care of the animals on Jollity Farm, a small shelter in Gerrans, Cornwall where Mary Alice and her husband Chris rescue displaced, unwanted animals, some of whom were doomed for slaughter.

Jollity Farm provides sanctuary for them, for the rest of their natural lives.

The book is a collection of poetry and prose, written by friends of animals
from around the world.

Authors penned their thoughts on a wide variety of subjects concerned with animal welfare and rights, including contributions from actress Melita Morgan, Agent For Change, The Scary Guy, singer/songwriter Maria Daines, writers Mark David Hatwood, Frank. E. Bittinger and many more.

Mary Alice said the book is dedicated to the memory of her beloved rescue dog Alfy, who passed away earlier this year just before his 18th Birthday.

'It's a testament to the united love and compassion people feel for animals, and I hope it will help to make people a little more aware of the plight of sentient beings in society today.

ANIMALS ASIA NEED URGENT FUNDS please read - 4 June 2008

We need your help urgently!

Dear all,

It’s now almost three weeks since the devastating earthquake hit Sichuan in China and the full horror of the tragedy is really hitting home. As many as 90,000 people could have died in the quake and its aftershocks, which are still causing panic throughout the province. More than 365,000 people are injured, many of them also losing their homes and livelihoods.

Animals Asia is extremely fortunate and grateful that no staff or animals at our Moon Bear Rescue Centre in Chengdu were hurt, but we too are facing a difficult time. We are in urgent need of donations to deal with two emergencies arising from the earthquake. First we are racing against time to rescue dogs and cats from a town in northern Sichuan, where the authorities have ordered a cull of all companion animals; and second, we need to rebuild four of the buildings at our sanctuary.

Four of our main buildings, including the big office and accommodation blocks have been so badly damaged that they will need to be completely rebuilt at a cost of hundreds of thousands of US dollars. A fifth building needs repairs. Initially, onsite staff (who launched an immediate donations drive among themselves for earthquake victims) were sleeping on the floors of the quarantine area for new bear arrivals, but are now crammed into the remaining buildings that have been deemed safe.

But rebuilding will come later. Right now, there are more urgent needs. Rescuing already traumatised family dogs and cats from being shot or beaten to death in the city of Dujiangyiang - one of the worst-hit areas is our highest priority. The authorities there have ordered a cull of all dogs and cats, even if they have owners, adding to the misery of survivors who are clinging to their pets for comfort.

We have set up a hotline and a receiving station at a local vet clinic for earthquake victims to surrender their dogs to us for safe-keeping until they are back on their feet and can take them back. Many people, terrified that their much-loved dogs would be killed in front of them have been hiding them in the ruins of their homes and risking their lives to go and feed them.

We have promised those who have handed us their pets that we will make sure they are well cared for. If, after six months, they are still unable to take their pets back, we will continue to look after them until they can be reunited. If they decide they can’t take their pets back, we will try to rehome the animals.

So far, we have rescued around 100 dogs and brought them to Chengdu’s Qi Ming Pet Rescue Centre, which can take about 100 more. We have also rescued some cats and a few starving dogs that have been found wandering around looking for food. We are giving each a health check and vaccination and will build a quarantine facility for the dogs at the shelter and provide them with food. All this too, of course, will cost money - and we’re not sure how long we’ll have to provide for these dogs.

I am the first person to question where donations are going in a crisis situation and I can assure you that any donation you make to our earthquake appeal will go directly to our work rescuing dogs and cats from the earthquake zone, vaccinating against rabies, building quarantine kennels at the Qi Ming shelter and supplying other local shelters with food and medical help. Being here on the ground, I will ensure your donation goes first to distraught dogs and cats. Any funds left over will go to rebuilding our bear sanctuary.

Given the enormity of the Sichuan tragedy, this is a difficult time for us to raise funds, as donors are understandably channelling their donations to the human victims of the earthquake. So please, if you are considering donating to the earthquake relief effort, remember that animals are victims too - and by giving to us, you may be helping to save the only family member a survivor has left.

Warm wishes,

Jill

WORLD FILM PREMIERE 'MEAT THE TRUTH' - 20 May 2008

Dear all,

yesterday Paul & I attended the world premiere of the film 'Meat The Truth' in London's Leicester Square.

'Meat The Truth' is a brilliant film & we took lots of pics & clips to share the day with our friends, it's not often we can get out together & we enjoyed ourselves big time!

The film was hosted by the Vegetarian Society for the start of National Vegetarian Week and it covers the important subject of mass meat production contributing to climate change. I hope you'll view the film when it's in your country as this was the first date of a world tour and it will help to educate people regarding the suffering of animals and the effect meat consumption has on our environment.

http://www.meatthetruth.nl/content/view/113/news/view/11

Some notes from the film -

If everyone in UK abstained from eating meat for one day a week it would result in greater carbon savings than taking 5 million cars off the road!

Abstaining from meat for 7 days would be the same as eliminating all greenhouse gas emissions from 12.5 million households in UK.

Flabbergasting stuff but good to know there is something we can all do to help the planet.

You can view the film we made of our day on this link -

All doing wonderful things to speak up for animals, check them out!

My thoughts -

'Meat The Truth' is a fantastic film, a real eye opener and shows the benefits of changing to a vegetarian/vegan diet, yes for the animals but also to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as the film demonstrates so clearly - If everyone in the UK abstained from eating meat for one day a week it would result in greater carbon savings than taking 5 million cars off the road, a meat-free UK for 7 days would be the same as eliminating all greenhouse gas emissions from 12.5 million households. This is a message we really need to share! And imagine the carbon savings if the world went vegetarian for even part of the week every week, we are overlooking this issue whilst climate change is ravaging the planet.
Well done to the producer & everyone involved in Meat The Truth, it’s an educational film but also watchable and fun, the message is vital and will make a difference!

This is Angel, we really had a hard time to find a name to match the character of this female dog, and finally we thought nothing would be more appropriate and truly expressive more than 'Angel' to match her character. Despite broken hips and legs, she never made a sound , always content, grateful and so angelic.

We received a distress `call from a lady who said this dog had been hit by a car in the morning , they found her at the gate of their house, the boys in the street said a car hit her early morning. Several calls were made to some shelters but unbelievably they all said there was no place for her!!!!

A friend of Mona Khalil happened to hear a woman talking about this story and called immediately to put her in contact with the woman who found the dog.

As we still do not own an ambulance and the time element was really important, we asked Animal Friends to send their ambulance and they generously sent it immediately to collect the dog.
X rays were done, many breaks were found in several places, amputation for one leg is a possibility, a special nail needs also to be inserted. It could take several operations and we expect to possibly need a wheel chair for her too.

ESMA is a 'NO KILL SHELTER'. All animals are given all the necessary and needed procedures to save their lives, and ensure them a good quality of life even if handicapped.

The time element is really tight, she is such a sweet character that even the vets that examined her said they were never confronted with such a sweet dog in all this pain, but never the less, she is still grateful with such an expressive face, and eyes that speak volumes, and she can really show her gratefulness in a way that makes you want to jump to the sky to do something for her.

We need help to give her the best medical treatment possible and to buy her the wheelchair also, and a special mattress for her to sleep on till the chair arrives. We expect her to need 2- 3 surgeries.

We are calling for help on behalf of Angel. Is there anyone out there willing to help this angel???

THE OPERATION NEEDS TO BE PERFORMED BY SUNDAY, while there is still a chance, before nerve damage sets in.

PLEASE HELP URGENTLY.

If you can commit please let us know by return and we will inform you how you can transfer funds urgently for Angel's operation and treatments.

Thank you

An open letter to Vesna & supporters, GAR - 15 May 2008

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

An email which was written to me (below my foreword), but is addressing YOU as well ...

This morning I received a very nice email (below) from Maria Daines, whose passion for animals is reflected in her songs (page 14 in the latest GAR newsletter). I would like to share her email with everybody who is 'making a difference' in their various ways to help animals in Greece ... either 'on the ground' or by supporting & fund-raising for GAR so that we can help animals in Greece .... and the lucky few, to get OUT of Greece!!

In the early beginning of GAR's existence, a GAR supporter wrote in one of her letters one short sentence which has been very inspiring: "all the darkness in the world can't put out the light of one small candle". Indeed it can't!! And I add to that my favourite saying: "Where there's a will, there's a way". Absolutely!! Our work may seem exasperating at times, but every animal saved is precious and it gives us the strength to go on.

In another email received this morning, Anastasia (Dimitris' right hand) told me about a small dog her brother found yesterday in a rubbish bin (those large 'wheelie bins' with sliding top) and called her. The dog was inside a sack, wriggling in an effort to free herself, but the top was tied. Anastasia took 'Betty' (as she later named the little dog) to a vet, who had to muzzle her before she could be examined (the little mite was scared and who could blame her for snapping). She was found to have a horrible maggot infested wound under her tail, which the vet cleaned ..... one picture which was taken by Anastasia at the vet's is enclosed, though she will send a few 'after' pics in a few days time ... let me know if you too would like to see them.

Best regards to you all,
Vesna

Warning graphic images of animal cruelty in Greece

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=IXgwhKw55dI

Open letter to GAR supporters world wide

Dear Vesna,

I've been planning to write this letter since Saturday when I read your
newsletter, no 58, whilst at band rehearsal in between setting up the PA
and waiting for our gang to arrive. I sat on a battered old sofa in the
barn in the middle of nowhere and every now & then I gasped and read
sentences out to Paul that he shook his head at and both of us kept
repeating over and over, how terrible it is that the issue of animal
cruelty is almost exclusively ignored by the authorities in Greece.

I marvelled at the stoicism of you and your supporters and fellow
rescuers, I punched the air with my fist reading the success stories and I
had tears rolling down my face when I came to the photographs of some of
the poor wretches that you have saved. Mala broke my heart.

I smiled at some of the photograph captions such as 'It's a dog's life and
I like it' - priceless! And I submerged myself for a good hour or so in
the stories that touch our hearts all over the world (yet sadly not enough
hearts are touched in Greece). The ignorance and lack of mercy of some
members of our pathetic species really makes me angry and upset. It's
surely hard enough already to make a difference, yet, as I am learning
now, in Greece not only is animal rescue frowned upon - but the
authorities seem to mock tourists and compassionate advocates because
of their obvious care for stray, starving animals. Now that is really
something isn't it! People come from other countries to help Greek animals
and they are given no help, simply hindered in many cases. I'm disgusted.

'A tiny pocket of Rhodes, full of tragic tales...' literally had me
running for the loo to get tissues. This story should be made into a film,
I wish I had money, I'd hire people to create it! The story had me
transfixed by its power and humanity, by the sheer dedication of such
friends of animals, saviours of these little scraps of fur that go
unnoticed by so many ordinary citizens in these faraway places. And one
dog, one cat or one donkey at a time, you are making a huge difference
and I'm amazed at the various rescue organisations interwoven into this
vast supportive help network that you have forged out of kindness.

Such dedicated volunteers and friends of animals who give all the time in
their lives to saving and restoring these pitiful stray, neglected and
lonely animals. The animals second chance is given through the creation of
many miracles made for them by loving hearts and hands. It is heartrending
to know that there is also human suffering in varying degrees, that
facilitates these second chances. People that have given up their home
comforts, their money, maybe even their families and friends, certainly
they could have opted for easier lifestyles, yet instead they give
everything they have, wholeheartedly, to the unseen ghosts of our rotten
world and one by one they are given protection and a place of safety, out
of harms way.

What touches me most is (I can hardly explain it in words, songs are far
easier to write than thank you letters) but I hope I can get this across,
what really, really gets me deepest in my heart, is the way your people
regain an animal's trust in human beings. This is something that is so
much harder than treating a wound or giving food, it's that indefinable
peace that is brought back into a fear stricken, discarded life, that I
feel most grateful for. It can't be described, I'm sure the only way a dog
can express this is by a wagging tail or through the look of love in those
gentle, accepting eyes that seem to smile.

I'm rambling I know and I could never do justice to the work I read about
in your newsletter, I wish I'd had a pen and paper to make notes as I was
reading, but I was too engrossed to even look up, let alone write.

The story of Phoenix was the most tremendous rescue in the world. I was so
pleased for the media coverage and over the moon that he has such a
wonderful new home and family. I was also thrilled 'Baguette' was saved in
the nick of time.

The pain Lucy, the 8 month old setter-cross has endured is unimaginable,
yet again cruel people with nothing better to do with their time but cause
a poor, defenceless animal such agony, I hardly have words. I can only say
how impressed I am with Mary and her tireless dedication to duty for these
precious souls.

There are so many outstanding human beings mentioned in the stories that I
wish I could meet every one of them and tell them how fantastic they are.
I'd like to tell them all how much their work of compassion means and sing
their praises from the rooftops, if only we could truly thank people like
this in a proper way, but I know they would only wish for more help to
come for their animals and this makes me love them more.

I also wanted to thank you for the lovely section on your youtube video
and say we were very proud to be included in the news and it was great to
read that the video and our songs are making a stand for the animals. This
is what the songs were written for and as soon as we get some more copies
of MUFA pressed, you can be sure I'll get a batch to you to sell for fund
raising. Again I wish I had the means to make things happen faster but
slow and sure is ok, I can live with that if there are people like you and
your team in the world!

And one more thing, Paul and I are 'fingers crossed' hoping to come to the
Sponsored Dog Walk on June 15th! If we do make it we'll be bringing our
Madi with us, she's is in love with every dog she meets, she's a beautiful
one year old black lab and she had hip surgery in December and made the
most remarkable recovery, hence she is the star of our song 'Dog Walker' -
her barks can be heard at the end of the song LOL!! Anyway we're planning
to make it if at all possible and we can't wait to meet lots of 'Greekies'
and your wonderful friends and rescuers. What a great day it will be.

I'll close for now and thank you again for kindly sending me a copy of GAR
58 and please pass on a message that everyone is in my thoughts and in my
heart, especially the animals saved and some not yet saved. I'm sure many
more will be fortunate to find rescue thanks to GAR and all your
magnificent supporters world wide.

Long may you continue to do this vital work and best, best, best wishes!

Lots of love,
Maria xx

A NEW NO-KILL SHELTER FOR DALLAS! - 14 May 2008

Great news from the wonderful Jonnie England!!

Photobucket

I’m excited to tell you about plans for a new no-kill shelter in Dallas! Below is the news release that was just sent to the media:

Local animal welfare group to expand mission, build no-kill shelter

DALLAS, TX–Paws in the City, a local nonprofit animal welfare organization, will celebrate 20 years of animal rescue when the group’s leaders announce, on June 14, ambitious plans to expand their mission by building a no-kill shelter in Dallas.

A local leader in rescuing and re-homing disadvantaged pets, Paws in the City is an all-volunteer organization, housing needy animals in a vast network of foster homes and boarding kennels–and adopting them into new, loving homes through weekend adoption fairs. The group is launching a capital campaign to finance a state-of-the-art shelter building, a facility that will both house additional homeless pets and also include a much-needed spay/neuter clinic.

Paws in the City was co-founded in 1988 by long-time animal advocate Cathi Wood, and Jonnie England, who spent the past decade guiding another no-kill shelter, Operation Kindness, as its Executive Director.

Paws in the City principals recently realized that the organization has grown to the point where a high-visibility shelter building can provide a focal point for adoptions, spay/neuter, volunteer training, and community education. “We’re very excited about our future,” says Wood, president of the board of directors. “In order to continue our tremendous growth, fund raising, and adoptions, it’s time for us to build a facility. We know there are many people in the community who are ready to help us and share our concerns and goals for the animals who need us.”

A steering committee has been meeting to draft plans for the capital campaign and to identify a temporary home where new programs can be initiated while building funds are raised. England, one of the steering committee members, is happy to be back working with old friends. “Since we originally formed this organization, it has grown by leaps and bounds and changed names,” says England. “But the people who run it are still close to my heart. I’m very excited about working with them to build a facility we’ll all be proud of.”

The formal announcement of the capital campaign will be made at Paws in the City’s biggest annual event, “Top Hat & Tails,” June 14 at the Hotel Intercontinental. Tickets are on sale at the web site -

www.PawsInTheCity.org

Cathi and I met my very first day volunteering at Operation Kindness in Garland in January 1986. I was brand new to animal welfare, but Cathi was already a seasoned volunteer. We discovered we had a common interest—feeding, trapping/neutering, and rescuing street animals. We asked Sherrie Finch, another Operation Kindness volunteer, to join us in starting a nonprofit we then called Animals Deserve a Chance. Over the years, I stayed with OK and Cathi volunteered with several groups, but we kept ADAC going. When I became executive director of Operation Kindness, I resigned from ADAC, and Cathi changed the name to Paws in the City. Now we’ve come full circle, with both of us back at the organization we started 20 years ago and working for a no-kill shelter for homeless animals.

We have a long road ahead of us, but countless abandoned, neglected and abused dogs and cats are counting on us to make this a reality. And with your continued help and support, we have no doubt we will succeed!

Please join us if you can at “Top Hat & Tails” on June 14 for more news about this exciting project. Meanwhile, we’ll keep you posted on how, together, we can make a difference for the animals.

As always, thanks for caring,

Jonnie England

Shocking animal cruelty cases, please help Limerick Animal Welfare - 2 May 2008

Image hosting by <br />
Photobucket

Dear all,

since I've been involved in writing songs for animal rights & welfare I've seen some horrific sights and every day yet more alerts come in and money is always needed all around the world for many rescue shelters, I pass on whatever I can to like minded friends & I always hope that things will improve and some animals will be saved. Tonight I was reading the news on Limerick Animal Welfare website and I just wasn't prepared to see the latest cruelty cases that the staff at this rescue organisation have had to deal with recently.

http://www.limerickanimalwelfare.com/law/crueltycases.htm

No matter how many times you see neglect and cruelty of animals, it never gets any easier or more understandable. It's simply WRONG that our society allows this to happen to animals because they are voiceless. Laws are not effective, many people turn a blind eye and overbreeding contributes to thousands of unwanted animals being put to sleep every day.

I'm sick of it. Sick of seeing these poor, wretched creatures in such emaciated conditions that the only thing left for them is to be euthanized.

Please consider sending the website link to your friends and animal welfare groups. Donations are always needed to keep this wonderful place open for all the needy souls.

Thanks to Mary Alice, Cornwall's Voice For Animals, for creating this eye catching banner for Limerick Animal Welfare Shelter.

Thank you & best wishes
