Maria Daines: MUSIC

FLOWERS BY THE ROADSIDE

(Maria Daines/Paul Killington)
July 27, 2008
Performed by Marybeth Daines

In July 1997 my cousin Steven and his best friend Ben, were tragically killed in a car accident, aged 19 and 21 years old. Their parents started a charity 'The Best Mates Trust' in memory of their precious sons.

The Best Mates Trust offers a listening ear and financial support to other local families who are victims of serious road accidents or who suffer the loss of a child.

In recent years 17 people have been killed on the A1307 in Cambridgeshire and there are many memorial gardens along this dangerous stretch of road.

We hope 'Flowers by the Roadside' will remind people to take care and drive safely.

'Flowers by The Roadside'

Flowers by the roadside growing taller every day
Tended by the hands whose love will keep them safe they pray
So sad to see the flowers on the roadside every day
In memory of unfinished lives, lost along the way...

There's Stevie and there's Ben too young to bid goodbye our world
Yet part of them lives on amongst the flowers on the verge
And in the trees above them their voices on the breeze
Remembered by the ones who tend the garden on their knees.

So sad the flowers by the roadside
Passing by the window of a car
So sad the flowers by the roadside
Without ever knowing who you are.

Tributes for the fallen, we pass them every day
Laying by the highway that has taken them away
And when the road is silent from the hollow engine roar
You might just hear the echo of a voice that is no more.

So sad the flowers by the roadside
Passing by the window of a car
So sad the flowers by the roadside
Without ever knowing who you are.

Tributes for the fallen, we pass them every day
Laying by the highway that has taken them away
They could be for a mother or a brother or a friend
Or maybe just a memory of the lives of two young men...
