THE COUNTRY THAT I KNEW

(Paul Killington)
March 20, 2010

Feeling nostalgic and hankering after times past, I woke up one morning with this song in my head and it just had to come out, there were a lot of good things about those days that we could do with now.

'THE COUNTRY THAT I KNEW'

When you reach a certain age, you start looking at the past
And wonder what you did with all those years
You think about the future, how long it's gonna last
And you know that there will be a few more tears

Now mum and dad are gone and the kids have all grown up
Now I'm here with those dreams of yesterday
When a man was left alone to take care of his own
I thought the good times they were here to stay

What happened to the country that I knew?
It used to be a place for me and you
You could walk down any street and know the people that you'd meet
Would always lend a helping hand or two

The fifties went by in a flash, the sixties they did too
As a young man I still had a dream
Now we're kept in our place by men without a face
Oh but nothing can replace my love for you

What happened to the country that I knew?
It used to be a place for me and you
Now everything has changed with the morals rearranged
And the simple things they seem so hard to do

What happened to the country that I knew?
It used to be a place for me and you
You could walk down any street and know the people that you'd meet
Would always lend a helping hand or two.
